Sophia Kickhofel is a jazz alto saxophonist based in New York City. She is a graduate of Juilliard and performs around NYC as a band leader and sideman. She has performed at venues including Carnegie Hall, Library of Congress, Dizzy’s Jazz Club, CloseUp, and Smalls with musicians including Russell Malone, Sean Jones, and Dan Weiss. Sophia recently organized a two week long tour of her original compositions in South Korea with the help of a YoungArts microgrant. She also brought her NYC based quartet to Minnesota to play at venues she grew up performing at. Through exploring the expression of emotion using sound, she seeks to resurface memories people hold close to their hearts.
"We will be performing a collection of original compositions that are inspired by experiences from the past few years that are important in the development of my sense of self. While I was in college, I attempted to compose every day. This process slowly became therapeutic for me and now these compositions represent the state of my emotions during that season of my life. Half of the compositions we will play are diary entries that are titled the date in which they were composed. The other half of the songs are inspired by experiences that I had in nature that were shared with people in my life who I love. "
